Surgery

We offer a variety of procedures for both elective and more critical needs.  Your questions are encouraged - we will describe your pet’s surgical procedure and expectations for both healing and full recovery.

Most of our elective procedures are done in the morning, to allow time for a gradual and full recovery from anesthesia through the day.  Before your pet’s scheduled surgery, we will call to remind you of important pre-surgical details, such as the feeding schedule.

In general, we ask that your pet be fasted overnight (make sure everyone in the home understands this), but access to water is fine and recommended.

If your pet is on medication, we will additionally instruct you on the dosing plan the morning of the surgery, and whether you need to bring any of the medications along to be given later in the day.

Anesthesia

Patients are constantly monitored through the entire procedure including recovery, with an anesthetic plan tailored for your pet’s specific procedure and individual medical needs.  We employ balanced anesthesia techniques in order to calm our patients, minimize pain, and maximize patient safety.  We emphasize prevention of pain by using pain medications prior, during, and after surgery and by using multiple pain medications that target different pain pathways.
